Garcia Ruiz Tabbed Big 12 Player of the Week

NORMAN - Oklahoma sophomore Julia Garcia Ruiz was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Tuesday.

Playing from the top position, Garcia Ruiz went 3-0 in doubles and singles combined to lead Oklahoma to two ranked victories over the weekend at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Morelia, Mexico, product provided the match-clinching victory against No. 36 BYU, winning in straight sets against No. 105 Bobo Huang, 6-0, 6-3. On the second doubles court, Garcia Ruiz and partner Zdena Safarova led the duo of Huang and Kaavya Sawhne, 5-3, as the Sooners clinched the doubles point, leaving their match unfinished. Oklahoma ended the day with a 6-1 victory.

In Saturday's match with No. 26 Texas Tech, Garcia Ruiz earned another ranked singles win, pulling away in the third set against No. 39 Cristina Tiglea, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. She also clinched the doubles point for the Sooners against the Red Raiders, topping Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk, 6-3, with Safarova.

The award is Garcia Ruiz's second this season after being named Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 27.

Garcia Ruiz is now a perfect 11-0 in singles in Big 12 play and 6-1 in doubles on the spring season.

The No. 20 Sooners will close out the regular season with a Texas road swing this week, starting with a match at No. 34 Baylor on Friday at Noon, followed by a clash with No. 40 TCU on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
