Julia Garcia Ruiz is one of the last four standing at the NCAA Individual Championships.
Held at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, Garcia Ruiz advanced to the semifinals for the first time in her career after picking up four straight-set victories.Ā The Morelia, Mexico native is the Sooners first individual semifinalist since Layne Sleeth in 2023.
In the first round, the junior knocked off Duke's Irina Balus, 6-2, 7-5 to slide into the round of 32. In her second match of the tournament, she defeated her first ranked opponent as she took down No. 36 Grace Piper (USC), 7-6(1), 6-3).Ā
By advancing to the round of 16, Garcia Ruiz claimed her second career All-American honor.Ā
In the round of 16, she defeated Auburn's Merna Refaat, 7-5, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals where she cruised to an upset victory over fifth-seeded Valerie Glozman (Stanford), 6-1, 6-1.Ā
In the semifinals, Garcia Ruiz will face Auburn's DJ Bennett for a chance to play for the national championship. The match is set for Saturday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m. CT.Ā
