Garcia Ruiz, Shcherbinina Qualify for NCAA Individual Championships

NORMAN — Julia Garcia Ruiz and Alina Shcherbinina punched their tickets to the NCAA Individual Championships on Sunday at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
No. 16 Garcia Ruiz earned her spot in the singles draw after defeating Texas A&M's Daria Smetannikov, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Sectional Championships. The junior went on to top Michigan's No. 15 Piper Charney in the main draw semifinals, 6-4, 6-7(4), [10-7], in what ended up being her last match of the tournament.
After losing in the main draw semifinals, No. 56 Shcherbinina responded nicely with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Houston's No. 109 Santa Strombacha in a playoff quarterfinal match. With the win, the senior secured her second career trip to the NCAA Championships singles draw.
In doubles action, the No. 22 duo of Garcia Ruiz and Chloé Noël added a win, topping Michigan's Bayley Sheinin and Ava Bruno in the consolation quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-5.
Seniors Emma Staker and Ava Catanzarite rounded out the remaining Sooners competing in Ann Arbor. Both added two wins in singles play.
Representing Oklahoma at the Rice Invitational over the weekend were Gloriana Nahum, Salakthip Ounmuang, Cara Mester and Emma Ghirardato.
The quartet of freshmen finished the three-day event with eight total victories – six in singles and two in doubles.
Nahum notched a team-high three singles wins in the main draw, while also adding a win in doubles with partner Ounmuang, shutting out UTSA's Letizia Corsini and Vittoria Baccino, 6-0.
The NCAA Individual Championships will be held at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The tournament runs from Nov. 19-24. Draws for the championships will be released at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 16. The NCAA Championships will be streamed on ESPN+ with a Cracked Racquets CrossCourt Cast. Individual courts will be streamed on Playsight.
