Sooners Drop Championship Match to No.6 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Oklahoma men's tennis team fell in the championship match of ITA Kickoff Weekend to No. 6 Tennessee, 4-1, Sunday afternoon.

The Sooners dropped the doubles point after losses on courts two and three. Tennessee's No. 34 Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka took down Mark Mandlik and Nathan Han, 6-3. Jordan Hasson and Luis Alvarez battled back from behind to tie their match at five games all after Alvarez won the break point. Younes Lalami and Filip Apltauer won the match 7-5 after claiming the deuce point in the last game. Alex Martinez and Kholo Montsi had a lead at 3-2 and were ahead against No. 26 Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz when doubles concluded.

Hasson won the first set on court three, 6-4 against Lalami and gained a 5-4 lead before winning the match, 6-4, 6-4, to give the Sooners their first point.

Mandlik fell behind 0-2 in the first set but claimed a 5-3 lead before sending the set into a tiebreak at six games all. Madnlik dropped his first set, 6-7 (5), before falling in the second, 5-3. Schlageter went down 6-5 against Shunsuke Mitsui before bringing the set to six games all and losing the tiebreak, 6-7 (5). He ultimately dropped his match on court two, 6-7 (5), 0-6. No. 91 Martinez fell to No. 20 Johannus Monday in straight sets on court one, 2-6, 0-6.

No. 89 Alvarez dropped his first set, 4-6, to Apltauer but won a deuce point to take a 4-2 lead in the second set before play was stalled. No. 125 Montsi won the first set on court four, 6-4, but play was stalled before his three-set match could finish.

UP NEXT

The Sooners head back to Norman to face Wichita State on Friday, Feb. 2 in the first Friday Night Lights match of the season.
