Four Sooners Open Season in ITA Rankings

NORMAN – With the 2023-24 tennis season quickly approaching, the ITA announced its preseason rankings on Tuesday. Four University of Oklahoma men's athletes appeared on the list. 

 

Fifth-year seniors Alex Martinez and Justin Schlaegter checked in at No. 49 and No. 58 in the men's singles rankings, while junior Jordan Hasson came in at No. 90. True freshman Kholo Montsi is ranked sixth in the newcomer/freshman rankings.

 

"These guys are all working hard and preparing to build on these rankings this fall," head coach Nick Crowell said. "It's a great start to the fall, but the guys are humble and hungry for more."

 

Fifth year senior Alex Martinez, a Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Spain, product set a new career high ranking after earning nine ranked singles wins across the 2022-2023 season, and was named to the 2023 All-Big 12 Singles Second Team. 

 

Martinez was followed closely by Schlaegter, an Albbruck, Germany, product, whose ranking also garnered a new career high. Schlaegeter earned five ranked wins over the 2022-2023 campaign, including a victory over then-No. 13 Filip Planinsek of Alabama.

 

Rounding out OU in the rankings is Hasson, who finished with an 18-12 singles record for the 2022-2023 season. The Zikhron Ya'akov, Israel, product also posted three ranked wins over the course of the season.

 

The Sooners were led by Kholo Montsi, who is No. 6 in the Newcomer/Freshman rankings. Montsi, a product of East London, South Africa, and brings a career-high ATP ranking of No. 601, and an ITF junior world ranking of No. 12.

 

The Oklahoma men's tennis 2023-24 schedule will be released at a later date.
