NORMAN — New Oklahoma head volleyball coach Aaron Mansfield announced Friday the addition of transfer Rylee Fay to the Sooners' roster.
A 5-9 setter, Fay will join OU after playing the 2022 season at New Mexico State. She started her collegiate career at Missouri State in 2020.
"Rylee is going to be a great addition to our program," said Mansfield. "She has a great passion for the game and for becoming the best player and teammate she can be. She has gained valuable setting experience at her previous universities, and we will look to build off of that foundation. We can't wait for her to get started here."
At New Mexico State, Fay enjoyed a stellar sophomore season in 2022 as the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) leader in aces (53) and aces per set (.52), the latter ranking No. 13 in the nation. She ranked third in program history for aces in a single season and was the only player in NCAA Division I with seven aces in two four-set matches in 2022.
As a freshman at Missouri State in 2020-21, Fay saw action in 12 matches and 39 sets as a setter and serving specialist, accumulating 70 assists, 35 digs and eight service aces in 2020. Fay recorded a double-double with season highs of 20 assists and 15 digs at Indiana State (March 27) and tallied 16 assists and nine digs in a home victory against Bradley (March 22).
An exemplary student, Fay was named to the honor roll at New Mexico State for three semesters (starting with the spring 2022 semester) and was part of the NMSU National Society of Leadership and Success in 2023. At Missouri State, she was named to the 2020 Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
From Iowa City, Iowa, Fay was a highly decorated athlete at Liberty High School. She earned first-team All-Mississippi Valley Conference honors her junior and senior seasons, was named to the AVCA Phenom List the last three years of high school (2017, '18, '19), and earned a spot on the 2019 Under Armour All-America Watch List. She also received four awards from Prep Sports, including volleyball player of the year and best all-around player in 2019, most versatile player and all-area team member in 2018. In 2019, she was also named to the Gazette All-Area Volleyball Team, was the Iowa Girls High School Volleyball Region champion and part of the Iowa Girls Association All-Star Game.
On the club circuit, Fay played for Xtreme and earned All-America honors in 2019 while playing for the USA Volleyball U17 national division champions. An all-state and all-district selection as a senior, she landed a spot on the Des Moines Register's All-Iowa Honorable Mention Team. Additionally, she was a bronze medalist on the Iowa High Performance Youth International Team in 2018, and played for a pair of top-five national finishers on the Iowa HP Select Team in 2016 (fifth place) and 2017 (second place). Fay was also on the golf team, winning the Iowa PGA Pro Junior and earning honorable mention All-Mississippi Valley Conference honors.
Fay is the daughter of University of Iowa graduates Mark and Karla Fay. Mark played baseball in community college at Kirkwood and North Iowa Area, while Karla was a volleyball and basketball player at Southwest Virginia Community College. Fay's older sister, Maddie, was a volleyball player at South Dakota State from 2017-21.
"I chose Oklahoma because of the amazing coaching staff," said Fay, who plans to major in early childhood education at OU. "They truly care for their athletes and want you to have the best college experience as a student-athlete. "I'm looking forward to playing for awesome coaches, continuing to learn and grow as a player under Coach Mansfield and his staff, and the amazing community."
