ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma senior women's golfer
Mikhaela Fortuna fired a 1-under 71 and is tied for ninth after the opening round of the NCAA Athens Regional at UGA Golf Course on Monday.
Fortuna was one of 12 golfers to finish under par and enters the second round three strokes back of Furman's Anna Morgan.
"Mikhela had a solid start today and played phenomenal on the back nine to make a comeback," said Oklahoma head women's golf coach
Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "It's easy as a player to get ahead of yourself out there. She did a great job staying in the present and playing one shot at a time. She put herself in a great spot and needs to keep going forward with her game plan."
After starting her round down two strokes through her first three holes, Fortuna strung together four-consecutive pars. She dropped another stroke on the eighth and wrapped up the front nine 3-over 38.
The Manila, Philippines, product tallied another par on the 10th and recorded back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th. Fortuna moved to 2-over after a bogey on the 13th hole and responded with her third birdie on the 14th.
After a pair of pars on her next two holes, Fortuna recorded consecutive birdies to close out the round, finishing with a 1-under 71. She recorded five birdies in her last eight holes, tying for the second-highest birdie total in the opening round.
Fortuna ranks fourth among individuals not among the top-five teams and is behind Morgan, Ole Miss' Chaiara Tamburlini (2-under, 70) and Kent State's Leon Takagi (2-under 70). Georgia (9-over, 279), Ohio State (even par, 288), South Carolina (1-over, 289), San Jose State (7-over, 295) and Maryland (7-over, 295) are the top-five teams.

The second round of the Athens Regional will start at 7 a.m. CT on Tuesday, May 9. Fortuna, Tulane's Carla Bernet and Penn State's Mathilde Delavallade will tee off on the first hole at 7:58 a.m. CT.
