NORMAN - Oklahoma women's tennis head coach Audra Cohen announced the addition of transfer Florencia Urrutia on Thursday.
Urrutia, from Santa Fe, Argentina, who has spent two seasons of her career at Kentucky and two at Miami, will join the Sooners in August 2023 and have a season of eligibility remaining.
"We are really excited for Flor to join our program," said Cohen. " She has played at the highest level in college tennis and the future is really bright for her. Her energy and competitiveness will have a huge impact on our program and we cannot wait for her to arrive."
At Kentucky, Urrutia, was ranked as high as No. 32 in the ITA singles release and racked up several wins over ranked players, including No. 31 Rebeka Mertena of Tennessee. She has been a pivotal factor for the Wildcats at the top two courts, which led her to qualify for the 2023 NCAA Singles Championships and be named to the All-SEC Second Team in singles. In her first year there, she led the team in victories and clinched four matches. She also tallied an 11-8 doubles record and claimed two ranked wins.
Prior to Kentucky, she began her collegiate career at Miami. In both years playing for the Hurricanes, she led the team in doubles wins and grabbed a ranked win over No. 16 Carol Lee of Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship semifinals.
Before college, Urrutia won the Argentinian National Tournament at both the U16 and U12 levels and a 15k in doubles.
"I chose Oklahoma because I really connected with the coaches," said Urrutia. "They will help me develop as a player and person. I can't wait to keep making history with them."
The Sooners will continue their successful 2023 season on Friday, May 10Ā at 4 p.m. CT against No. 3 Georgia in super-regionals competition in Athens, Ga.
