LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 4-seed Oklahoma men's tennis team fell 4-2 in a hard-fought battle to No. 1 Texas in the Big 12 semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
The doubles point set the tone for the match after a back-and-forth fight for the opening point. Texas claimed the top court 6-4 from No. 3 duo Cleeve Harper and Eliot Spizzirri over Baptiste Anselmo and Nathan Han. OU then took court three with a 6-4 win from Jordan Hasson and Siphos Montsi against Micah Braswell and Chih Chi Huang.
Coming down to court two, Alex Martinez and Justin Schlageter faced No. 89 Pierre-Yves Bailly and Siem Woldeab, but fell 7-6 (4) to the ranked pair.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Sooners opened singles with back-to-back court wins to lead the Longhorns. No. 111 Montsi notched a ranked win over No. 55 Braswell with a quick 6-1, 6-4 victory on court three. Schlageter then forced a third set and took the No. 4 court 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 against No. 45 Woldeab.
Texas went on to clinch three straight courts. No. 23 Bailly defeated Hasson 7-6 (2), 7-5 on court two, Harper rose above Han 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court five and No. 1 Spizzirri notched the top-court win over No. 94 Martinez, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
When play was halted, Luis Alvarez was tied withĀ Nevin Arimilli 6-2, 2-6, 4-4 on court six.
The Sooners await NCAA selection on Monday, May 1.
