John Wiley Wins 6-4 in Collegiate Debut

Sooners Come Up Short at No. 4 Iowa State

January 27, 2023 | Wrestling

The 22nd-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 4 Iowa State, 25-12,Ā on Friday night in Ames in the 100th all-time meeting between the two historic programs.Ā

The loss snapped Oklahoma's (7-4, 1-2 Big 12) four-dual winning streak, and extended Iowa State's (11-2, 4-0 Big 12) conference dual winning streak to 15 meets. The Sooners won four of the matches on the night, but surrendered bonus points at 133, 165 and 184 pounds to seal the dual.

In his collegiate debut, freshman and Mustang, Okla., product John Wiley upset No. 6 Paniro Johnson 6-4 with a single-leg takedown as time expired to win the 149-poubd match. Wiley is just the third wrestler to defeat Johnson this season, as the Cyclones' other two losses came at the hands of No. 1 Yianna Diakomihalis and No. 7 Kyle Parco.

Tate Picklo claimed the Sooners'Ā first win of the night after snatching the winning takedown over No. 23 Julien Broderson in the third period to win the 174-pound clash, 3-2. His victory kept the Sooners within striking distance of the Big 12-leading Cyclones through three bouts, and secured his second straight win in dual action.Ā

After three-straight losses on Friday night, No. 21 Joey Prata broke OU'sĀ cold snapĀ with a reversal in the second period of the 125-pound battle vs. Conor Knopick. His reversal proved the difference in a 2-0 victory.

In a top-30 matchup, No. 27 Mosha Schwartz grabbed the advantage over No. 15Ā Casey Swiderski with an escape early in the second period. Schwartz fended off Swiderski's late rally to win a 3-2 decision and claim his seventh consecutive victory.Ā

Jared Hill dropped a tight 7-5 decision in sudden victory after leading Jason Kraisser for nearly five minutes at 157 pounds. Former 157-pound national champion David Carr defeated Sooner Gerrit Nijenhuis, 18-6, in the 165-pound weight class. Keegan Moore was pinned by No. 4 Marcus Coleman at 184 pounds with just 10 seconds left in the match. Carson Berryhill dropped a 9-3 decision to Joel Devine in the 197-pound bout. Heavyweight, Josh Heindselman, fell 2-0 to No. 8 Sam Schuyler. At 133 pounds, Wyatt Henson was pinned by junior Zach Redding in 4:11.Ā

Oklahoma continues its stay in the Hawkeye State, and travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown vs. No. 15 Northern Iowa. The contest will be featured on FloWrestling.
