NORMAN – The Oklahoma wrestling team wrapped up its home slate with a dominant performance Sunday afternoon, cruising past Arizona State, 31-9, inside McCasland Field House. The win marked Oklahoma's ninth dual victory of the season against a Division I opponent – the most under third-year head coach Roger Kish.
The No. 18 Sooners (10-4, 3-3 Big 12) won seven of 10 bouts, including three by bonus points, over the Sun Devils (3-11, 1-7 Big 12). Prior to the match, Oklahoma honored nine senior student-athletes: Brian Soldano, Christian Forbes, DJ Parker, Eli Cordy, Jacob Zimmer, Juan Mora, Kaden Smith, Mannix Morgan and Peyten Kellar.
Oklahoma captured its first four matches to jump out to a 15-0 lead – an advantage the Sooners maintained through the final whistle. It marked just the second time this season Oklahoma's lightweights opened a dual 4-0 and the first since Dec. 21 against Duke.
Leading off at 174 pounds, No. 8 Carter Schubert extended his dual winning streak to five with a 5-3 decision over Cael Valencia. The redshirt sophomore has now won 13 of his last 14 bouts dating back to Nov. 23 against Indiana.
Morgan made his season debut at 184 on senior day. The Arden Hills, Minn., native used a first-period takedown and third-period escape to secure a 4-2 victory.
Seniors No. 11 DJ Parker (197) and No. 21 Juan Mora (285) made statements in their final bouts at McCasland Field House, adding bonus-point wins to put the Sooners firmly in control. Parker recorded his team-leading eighth major decision of the season with an 11-1 victory over Colton Hawks, improving to 15-5 on the year. Mora followed with a 23-7 (6:41) technical fall over Damion Schunke – his sixth tech fall of the season and third consecutive bonus-point win.
Following intermission, Carter Schmidt delivered a season-best performance at 133, using three takedowns, an escape and riding time to shut out Carter Dibert, 11-0. The victory marked Schmidt's second dual win of the season and his first since Nov. 23.
Oklahoma's remaining team points came via forfeit at 149 and a medical forfeit at 157, where Layton Schneider was awarded the win over Chance McClane.
The Sooners will hit the road to face No. 20 Missouri in a midweek showdown on Feb. 12. The dual marks the 60th all-time meeting between the only two Southeastern Conference institutions that sponsor wrestling, though both programs compete in the Big 12 as affiliate members. First bout from the Hearnes Center is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT and will stream on ESPN+.
