MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Key middleweight wins for Oklahoma had the match in the Sooners' favor after seven bouts, but 22nd-ranked West Virginia tallied a dual-shifting pin at 197 pounds to claim a 19-17 victory on Sunday afternoon in a back-and-forth top-25 showdown inside Hope Coliseum.

The No. 16 Sooners (8-3, 1-2 Big 12) were victorious at five weight classes but ultimately fell to the Mountaineers (8-3, 3-1 Big 12).

West Virginia opened the dual with back-to-back decisions at 125 and 133 before Oklahoma responded with a strong stretch through the middle of the lineup. No. 26 Tyler Wells (141) and Hunter Hollingsworth (149) each earned decision victories to even the score, while Peyten Kellar (165) and No. 8 Carter Schubert (174) followed with shutout decisions to swing the dual in Oklahoma's favor.

The redshirt freshman and Edmond North product Hollingsworth continued to solidify his spot in the lineup, notching his third consecutive dual victory. Schubert kept his breakout season rolling by earning his fifth ranked win of the year, holding on for a 2-0 decision that was decided by riding time over the Mountaineers' No. 16 Brody Conley.

After seven bouts, the Sooners held a 12-10 advantage.

West Virginia answered at 184 pounds with a decision before delivering the decisive blow at 197, where the Mountaineers' No. 21 Rune Lawrence recorded a second-period fall over No. 9 DJ Parker to flip the team score. Oklahoma closed the dual with authority at heavyweight, as No. 22 Juan Mora capped the afternoon with a dominant 19-4 technical fall over Brock Kehler, but the Sooners were unable to overcome the earlier swing.

UP NEXT

The Sooners will return home following a week off to host No. 3 Iowa State in a marquee Big 12 matchup at McCasland Field House. First bout is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. Beer, soda and popcorn will be available for $2.
