NORMAN — Five Sooners of the Oklahoma men's tennis team have earned a spot in the ITA Preseason Rankings, the association announced Tuesday.
Senior Mark Mandlik took the highest-singles ranking, coming in at No. 92. The Florida native finished his junior campaign 28-11 overall in singles, while also claiming a ranked win over No. 47 Richard Ciamarra of Texas. Mandlik clinched OU's win over No. 24 Illinois at the ITA Kickoff Weekend and earned a career-high No. 49 ITA Singles Ranking.
Alex Martinez, a senior, claimed the No. 101 spot after going 17-13 overall in singles. During his junior year, Martinez primarily played at No. 2 spot, picked up three top-50 wins and earned Big 12 Player of the Week twice.
Rounding out OU's appearances in singles, Jordan Hasson took the No. 122 ranking. The sophomore from Israel finished the 2021-22 season 28-12 in singles and clinched the Sooners' match against No. 23 Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Championship. Hasson also claimed the 2021 ITA Central Region Singles Championship, while also qualifying for the ITA National Fall Championships.
"We are ready to get to work and go out and improve on what we accomplished last season and this summer," said head coach Nick Crowell. "Our guys are hungry and ready to start the run at achieving our goals this year."
Two OU duos were highlighted in the doubles rankings. Martinez and junior Nathan Han came in at No. 51, having not been paired since the 2020-21 season. The duo claimed the All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team honor, compiled an 11-7 record at the top spot and rose as high as No. 28.
Mandlik and senior Baptiste Anselmo claimed the No. 58 ranking after a successful 2022 season. Primarily playing on court two, the pair won their matches against six ranked teams and picked up a top-25 win.
"It's exciting to see so many guys in the initial polls, but at the same time, we are not satisfied," said Crowell. "We are motivated to continue to improve each day. The team is focused on the process and they know what it will take to reach our goals in May!"
The Sooners' 2022-23 schedule will be released at a later date.
