Fortuna Ninth After Carmel Cup Opening Round

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Mikhaela Fortuna concluded the opening round of the season tied for ninth and leads Oklahoma women's golf after the first round of the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Fortuna finished her first 18 holes with an even par 72 and tallied four birdies through her first seven holes of the tournament. She dropped back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.
The Sooners concluded the opening day of the tournament seventh (384) and recorded the third-most pars (66).
Nina Lang recorded the second-best round of the day for a Sooner, firing a 2-over 74. Lang responded after dropping a stroke on the par-5 14th with a birdie on the next hole.
Newcomer Raychel Nelke is tied for 30th and concluded her first collegiate round with a 6-over 78.
Meagan Winans recorded a 7-over 79 and Maria Fernanda Martinez finished with a 9-over 81 to complete the OU scoring group for the day.
It is the first tournament the Sooners have played under the new play six-count-five format.
