EUGENE, Ore. — Oklahoma's men's track and field teams capped day one of the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday evening.
The day is highlighted by two advancements to the final competition of the men's 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles.
Senior Kristo Simulask kicked off the day in the men's decathlon, starting with the 100-meter dash with a time at 10.94. Simulask then went on to leap a PR at 23-9.50 (7.25 meters) in long jump, marked 43-10.50 (13.37 meters) in shot put, and cleared 6-6 (1.98 meters) in high jump. The senior from Estonia clocked a 49.74 in the 400-meter dash to close out day one in 10th place.
Men's hammer throw was represented by senior Bayley Campbell and redshirt senior Edward Jeans. Campbell claimed second team All-America honors after marking 225-5.00 (68.71 meters) to place 11th. Jeans threw a third-attempt mark at 223-5.00 (68.10 meters) for 12th place and became a second team All-American in his first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The men's 4x100-meter relay squad of redshirt senior Karson Kowalchuk, freshman Josh Bour, redshirt senior Demarius Smith and sophomore Alajuwan Robinson finished their season as second team All-Americans with a 15th-place finish at 39.21.
Junior Richard Kuykendoll was the first of two Sooners to advance to Friday's finals. The Texan automatically qualified by taking second in his heat and clocking a 45.59 in the 400-meter dash semifinals.
Redshirt senior and 2021 400-meter hurdles National Runner-Up Isaiah Levingston secured a lane in the finals after finishing first in his heat with a time of 49.52.
Smith made his way back to the track in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash semifinals. The redshirt senior clocked a 10.23 in the 100 for claim second team All-America honors and finished 21st in the 200 with a time of 20.80.
Two Sooners made their NCAA Outdoor debuts in men's shot put to become second team All-Americans. Redshirt senior Cooper Campbell marked 63-0.75 (19.22 meters) for 14th place, while junior Diego Trevino placed 16th with a throw at 62-3.00 (18.97 meters).
