T&F Set For NCAA Outdoor Championships

NORMAN — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams kick off the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., beginning June 8, on the University of Oregon campus. 
 
OU earned 20 entries, including two relay teams to the championships set to begin Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The championships will close on Saturday, June 11. Senior Kristo Simulask will get the competition started for the Sooners, competing in his first decathlon event, the 100-meter dash. After setting PRs in eight of out the 10 events, Simulask claimed the Big 12 title and set a new school record with a PR of 7,926 points. The title sent Simulask to his first career-trip to Eugene. The first event of the decathlon will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 8.
 
Redshirt senior Edward Jeans and senior Bayley Campbell will kickoff field events in the men's hammer throw. Jeans punched his first ticket to the national championships after a third attempt throw at 213-4 (65.03m), while Campbell qualified himself to Eugene for the second time in his career with a mark at 225-6 (68.7m). Hammer throw is slated to begin on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT.
 
Running events will begin in the evening with the semifinal of the men's 4x100-meter relay. The West Regional Prelim team, consisting of redshirt senior Karson Kowalchuk, freshman Josh Bour, redshirt senior Demarius Smith and sophomore Alajuwan Robinson, clocked a time of 39.54 and automatically qualified. The squad will race at 6:32 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
 
Smith will hit the track again for the men's 100-meter and 200-meter dash semifinals. The Atlanta, Ga. native punched two individual tickets after clocking a 10.17 in the 100 and a 20.52 in the 200 at the NCAA West Regional Prelims. Smith will race on Wednesday, starting with the 100 at 7:46 p.m. and the 200 at 8:44 p.m. CT.
 
Junior Richard Kuykendoll will represent the Sooners in the 400-meter dash semifinal. The newcomer took first in his heat to move on to the finals at the NCAA West Prelims, ultimately qualifying for the national championships with a time of 45.39. The race will begin at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
 
Redshirt senior Isaiah Levingston, 2021 national runner-up, will take the big stage for the last time after securing a lane in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.22 in Fayetteville, Ark. The school-record holder is slated to compete in the semifinal on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CT.
 
Men's shot put will close day one with two Sooners fighting for a chance at the national title. Redshirt senior Cooper Campbell will make his debut in Eugene at his last meet in an OU uniform. The Texan qualified after marking a 63-0.25 (19.21m). Junior Diego Trevino will also make his debut after a major PR at 63-1.50 (19.24m) in his last attempt to punch his ticket and move to No. 5 in program history. The Sooners will begin at 8:40 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
 
Day two action will highlight the women's qualifiers, while Simulask will continue his decathlon events, starting with the 110-meter hurdles at 1:30 p.m. CT.
 
Redshirt senior Lauren Jones will make her national debut after earning two spots in the women's hammer throw and discus throw. The Ohio native punched her ticket after marking a 219-4 (66.86m) in hammer throw and qualified for discus after a third-attempt throw at 187-3 (57.07m). Hammer will get going on Thursday, June 9, at 5 p.m. CT, while discus will begin on Saturday, June 11, at 4:05 p.m. CT.
 
The women's 4x100-meter relay team will get running events started on Thursday, beginning at 7:32 p.m. CT. The squad, consisting of freshman Mikayla Hayes, redshirt Ja'Leesa Giles, Camri Austin and freshman Jada Atkinson clocked a 44.19 to earn their spot in the championships. 
 
Freshman Olivia Lueking, 2022 Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Champion, will make her second NCAA Championships debut after being one of five to qualify for the indoor slate. The current pole vault school-record holder punched her ticket to Eugene after clearing 13-9.75 (4.21m) in prelims. Lueking will take the stage on Thursday, June 10, at 8 p.m. CT.
 
Austin will make her fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships and will compete individually in the women's 100-meter hurdles. The redshirt senior qualified after winning her heat in the semifinal and clocking a season-best time at 12.85. The event is scheduled to start at 8:32 p.m. CT on Thursday.
 
Two Sooners will represent OU in women's shot put. Newcomer Abby Moore will make her debut in Eugene after throwing a PR at 56-2.50 (17.13m) and moving to No. 5 in OU history. Junior Payden Montana makes her second appearance at nationals after a massive third-attempt throw at 57-11.25 (17.66m). Shot put will begin at 9:40 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 9.
 
NCAA Indoor Champion Vernon Turner will make his return to Eugene, Ore., competing in the men's high jump. Turner, who has competed in four NCAA championships, cleared a height of 7-1.75 (2.18m) in the prelims to advance to Oregon. Freshman Kason O'Riley will join Turner to make his NCAA debut, after clearing 7-0.50 (2.15m). The Sooners will start Friday's action, competing at 7:30 p.m. CT.
 
Junior Mikeisha Welcome, one of five to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, will make her second appearance in Eugene. Welcome claimed the last seat to nationals after leaping a season-best mark at 45-7.00 (13.89mw) in women's triple jump. The junior is set to compete on Saturday, June 11, at 4:50 p.m. CT.
Those on the track can advance to Friday and Saturday's finals by advancing out of the semifinal competition on Wednesday and Thursday.
