Sleeth Claims Big 12 Player of the Week

April 19, 2022 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – Oklahoma junior Layne Sleeth was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sleeth continued her dominant season by wrapping up the last weekend of the regular season undefeated. She claimed two ranked-wins in singles over Oklahoma State's No. 27 Lisa Marie Rioux and Pepperdine's No. 13 Shirori Fukuda at the top court and one court two victory in doubles.

Oklahoma's chance to secure the outright Big 12 regular season championship against No. 12 Oklahoma State came down to the final set, where Sleeth came back from a 4-1 deficit to take the court one win, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 and gave the Sooners a 4-3 Bedlam victory. Sleeth also aided the win on the doubles court by clinching the opening point with partner, Alexandra Pisareva. The Sooners finished the season undefeated in conference play and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tennis Championship.

The Sooners then returned home to host No. 5 Pepperdine in their final regular season match, taking down the Waves 4-2. At the top court, No. 14 Sleeth faced No. 13 Fukuda for OU's chance to close out the regular season undefeated at home. In a tough back-and-forth battle, Sleeth clinched the victory for the Sooners, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8).

This marks Layne Sleeth's first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor and OU's fourth of 2022.

The No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners will head to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Championship on April 22-24.
