NORMAN – Hannah Screen continued her strong start to the spring and fired a 2-under 70 to open play at the Mountain View Collegiate Friday. The Sooners finished the day with a 2-over 290 and are tied for eighth.
Screen tallied four birdies through her first six holes and finished her opening round with a birdie on the ninth. She is tied for 16th after the first 18 holes.
"We made a lot of early mistakes that were costly," said Oklahoma women's golf head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "This course is about the ability to place yourself in good spots off the tee and unfortunately we were in tough areas."
Maria Fernanda Martinez reentered the Oklahoma lineup after making an individual appearance at the Clover Cup. Fernanda Martinez tallied a pair of birdies on the fifth and 14th holes and finished with OU's second-best round of the day (E, 72).
Libby Winans finished the back nine 4-over but rallied in her final nine holes with a trio of birdies. She finished with back-to-back birdies and tallied a 1-over 73.
Mikhaela Fortuna (4-over, 76) and Meagan Winans (3-over, 72) each netted eagles on the par-5 third hole.
Kaylee Vesely (10-over 82) was Oklahoma's lone individual in the field.
"We have a lot of golf left and need to go out there with the mentality that we can compete," Drouin-Luttrell said. "We look forward to the opportunity to bounce back tomorrow"
