Sooners Sweep Doubleheader over New Mexico State

NORMAN — The No. 8 Sooners swept their doubleheader against New Mexico State on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.Ā 

In the first match of the doubleheader, the Sooners swept the Aggies 7-0.

The Corley sisters made quick work of their opponents, earning the 6-0 victory over Harsha Challa and Lisa Zhu at the No. 1 spot. Sasha Pisareva and Layne Sleeth clinched the doubles point for the Sooners with a 5-1 victory over Chloe Gavino and Natsuki Nishimura at the No. 2 line. The final doubles match was played out with Emma Staker and Anchisa Chanta taking court three, 6-3.

In singles, Marcelina Podlinska earned the first victory at the No. 6 spot over Miranda Bishard. Podlinska gave up just one set in her 6-0, 6-1 win. Staker put another point on the board for the Sooners with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bella Nguyen. Clinching the match was Carmen Corley at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chloe Gavino.

Pisareva added another point for OU with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Georgia Townsend at the No. 4 spot. Sleeth dominated at the No. 2 spot, not dropping a set in her 6-0, 6-0 victory. Closing out the final point for the Sooners was Ivana Corley with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3.

OU returned to action, sweeping the Aggies 5-0.Ā 

In the second match of the day, the Sooners took the doubles point with victories on all three courts. Staker and Chanta struck first with a 6-1 victory against Nguyen and Townsend on court three. Podlinska and Pisareva clinched the point for the Sooners, taking court two 6-1 against Nishimura and Gavi Kalaga. The teams played out the remaining court, and the Corley sisters took the top spot with a 6-3 victory.Ā 

In singles, Podlinska finished first for OU at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nguyen. Chanta continued the momentum with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nishimura on court three. Pisareva clinched the match for the Sooners, defeating Kalaga 6-1, 6-1 at the four spot.Ā 

Staker finished her match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court five against Townsend.

When play was halted, Ivana and Carmen Corley were up on their respective courts.Ā

The Sooners head to Madison, Wis., for the ITA National Indoor Championships on Feb. 11 to the 14.Ā
