February 18, 2022 | Softball
HOUSTON — No. 1 Oklahoma collected two run-rule wins Friday on day one of the Houston Classic. The Sooners beat McNeese 15-1 in five innings before turning around to beat host Houston 8-0 in five.
Senior Jana Johns had a day, going a combined 3-for-6 with seven runs batted in and two home runs, including five RBIs in OU's first game of the day.
OU's pitching staff of Jordy Bahl, Macy McAdoo, Nicole May and Hope Trautwein combined to give up just one run (unearned) on two hits over the two games. May threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout in OU's victory over Houston.
In the first game of the day, eight Sooners registered a hit, led by sophomore Tiare Jennings' perfect 3-for-3 performance with three RBIs. Johns brought in a team-best five RBIs, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Seven Sooners brought in at least one run, including six bringing one across in a 10-run second inning where the Sooners sent 15 to the plate.
Three Sooners went yard vs. the Cowgirls, with Johns launching a three-run homer and seniors Grace Green and Grace Lyons each hitting one-run shots.
Bahl collected her third win of the season in the circle, going 3.1 innings and surrendering no runs or hits and just one walk to go with four strikeouts. The junior McAdoo saw her first action of 2022 striking out one in 0.2 innings pitched with one hit and one walk. Trautwein finished the job in the fifth, striking out a pair and walking one.
OU turned around to face the Cougars approximately an hour after run-ruling McNeese, and picked up right where they left off. Johns hit a deep two-run shot in the first inning to start the scoring before two Sooners were able to race home on a wild pitch in the frame.
Sophomore Jayda Coleman brought in a pair on a single in the third prior to a sac-fly RBI from junior Mackenzie Donihoo put the Sooners up seven. Coleman raced home in the fifth on another wild pitch from the Cougars to bring the game into run-rule territory.
Five Sooners recorded a hit in the contest while Johns and Coleman each had two RBIs to pace the squad.
May went the distance for the second time this season to earn the win, striking out six and surrendering just one hit and two walks to the 18 batters she faced.
On the season, OU is outscoring opponents 63-2 and both opponent runs have been unearned. The Sooners have hit 13 home runs on the year.
Oklahoma returns to Cougar Softball Stadium on Saturday to face the same two opponents, McNeese and Houston, at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. CT, respectively.
