NORMAN - Oklahoma men's tennis head coach Nick Crowell announced the additions of Luis Valdes and Hank Trondson.
"We are very excited to announce these two signees today," said Crowell. "Both guys bring exactly whatĀ we are looking for in terms of tennis and culture to the team."
From Mexico City, Valdes will join the Sooners for the 2023 spring season. He enters the college world with career-high ATP ranking of 1156 in singles, as well as a ITF junior ranking of 56.
Valdes is ranked as the No. 2 in Mexico and has collected 11 ITF junior titles. In 2022, he reached the finals at the J2 Santo Domingo and advanced to the quarterfinals in three tournaments. Valdes also represented Mexico at the Davis Cup, where he collected a win, and is 7-2 against Blue-Chip players.
"Luis has been known around the world as one of the top players in this class," said Crowell. "He brings tremendous work ethic, heart and fight to the team and we love how he competes and will continue to grow. He was highly recruited around the country and we are excited to get to work with him in January."
Trondson, from Nashville, Tenn., will join the Sooners for 2023-24 season. He comes to Norman as a five-star recruit and the No. 28 player in the nation for the class of 2023.
In his home state, Trondson is the No. 1 recruit in Tennessee and won the Division II AA State Championship this past spring. He will arrive to Norman with UTR of 12.35 and a 26-5 record against star-rated players.
"Hank is a tremendous athlete and has a big game," Crowell said. "He's long and can cover a lot of court. He has a big serve and has continued to develop every year. We love what he brings to the program and look forward to him arriving next fall."
In addition to Valdes and Trondson, Crowell announced another signee in August, Siphos Montsi, who will join the squad in the spring. Montsi, a transfer from Illinois, is a 2021 All-American who reached a career-high ITA singles ranking of 42and doubles of 46.
Montsi advanced as far as the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships and was a unanimous First Team All-American Big Ten Selection. The transfer went 6-1 in singles at the top court and started his season with a 12-match singles win streak.
The Sooners are set to return to the court in the spring, and their schedule will be released at a later date.
