NORMAN — Oklahoma women's tennis players and doubles' partners Carmen and Ivana Corley will enter the season ranked as the No. 1 doubles team in the nation, the ITA announced Tuesday.
The Corley sisters closed the 2021 campaign with a 18-3 dual-match record, tallying a 7-1 mark against ranked opponents. The pair owns a 28-4 career record since they started competing together in 2019.
"I am so proud of Ivana and Carmen for their focus and desire to continuously improve their level overall," head coach Audra Cohen said. "Being ranked No. 1 in the country means that you have to learn through the wins as well as the losses, and they have done this."
The sisters from Albuquerque, N.M., rose as high 11th nationally in doubles last season to become the highest-ranked doubles team in program history. They became the seventh OU pair to earn a bid to the tournament and the first to do so under Cohen, who took over the program in 2017. Prior to playing a match in the NCAA tournament, the pair's single-season win percentage (.857) ranks second in program history.
"Carmen and I have worked really hard to put ourselves in this position," Ivana Corley said. "I am so proud of us for this achievement, but we will continue to keep our heads down and work, because our goal is to continue to raise our level with every match we play."
"It is exciting to see that the work is paying off," Carmen Corley said. "We are going to stay humble and hungry, because the endgame is much bigger than just this."
"Their dedication to the process makes them unstoppable," said Cohen.
The pair will return to the court this fall. The sisters earned a spot in the ITA All-American main draw to be played Oct. 4-10 in Charleston, S.C.
The Sooners' 2021-22 schedule will be released at a later date.
