Historic Season Ends in NCAA Tournament

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An historic season for the Oklahoma women's tennis team came to an end Friday at the hands of USC in the NCAA first round. The Sooners took the Trojans to the wire, but fell 4-3.

OU took the doubles point off USC, then grabbed singles wins from Dana Guzman and Martina Capurro before the Trojans rallied to take the match.

In doubles, No. 23 Carmen and Ivana Corley earned their 10th consecutive victory as they took out Eryn Cayetano and Angela Kulikov 6-4 at the top spot.

Camila Romero and Martina Capurro fell to Salma Ewing and Clare McKee 6-2. The point came down to court three, where Kianah Motosono and Dana Guzman battled Summer Dvorak and Danielle Wilson to a tiebreaker. The Sooners dominated the tiebreaker 7-3 to capture the Sooners' 10th consecutive doubles point this season.

No. 63 Guzman was the first Sooner off the court in singles as she grabbed a win over No. 98 Cayetano 7-6, 6-3 on court two. The victory was good for Guzman's ninth consecutive and her fourth against a ranked opponent this season.

Capurro put the Sooners up 3-0 as she held off a late rally by Summer Dvorak 6-3, 7-6 on court four.

At the top spot, No. 64 Carmen Corley fell to No. 42 Ewing 6-3, 7-6. Ivana Corley was defeated by Dani Wilson 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court three. Motosono fell to Constance Branstine 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court five. OU's Marcelina Podlinska dropped to McKee 7-5, 6-1, on court six.

The Sooners finish the season at 15-7 overall for a .682 win percentage, their best under head coach Audra Cohen. For the first time since 2014, OU entered the ITA top 25 and rose as high No. 21 this season. The Sooners downed seven ranked opponents with their signature win an upset of No. 16 UCF, who would go on to win the American Conference.

For the first time in Cohen's tenure, three or more players were ranked in the ITA singles rankings in each week the rankings were released and all earned career-high rankings. Additionally, OU's Carmen and Ivana Corley peaked at No. 11 nationally to capture the program's highest doubles ranking in history.

Carmen and Ivana Corley will play in the NCAA Doubles Championships, which will begin on May 23 in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA National Campus.
