NORMAN – Six members of the Oklahoma men's tennis team have earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, the conference announced Thursday.
Mason Beiler,
Mark Mandlik,
Matt Rodriguez,
Justin Schlageter,
Max Stewart and
Jake Van Emburgh all captured first team honors.
OU's six honorees tie for the most in program history and are the most since 2005.
Max Stewart was one of just two men's tennis student-athletes to hold a 4.0 grade point average.
This is the first academic honor for Mandlik, Rodriguez, Schlageter and Van Emburgh. It is the second for Beiler and the third for Stewart.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Sooners open the 2021 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at the College Station Regional on Friday at 11 a.m. with Denver. Should OU advance, it will face the winner between host Texas A&M and New Mexico on Saturday at 4 p.m. with a trip to the NCAA Team Championships on the line.
