Guzman Named to Grand Slam Development Fund Team

May 17, 2021 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – OU freshman Dana Guzman has been selected to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF) team for summer competition. Guzman will play the junior tournaments at Roland Garros and Wimbledon while training in Europe this summer.

The GSDF provides players the opportunity to take part in top level international competition while traveling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF coach. Originally established in 1986 to encourage and increase competitive opportunities in developing tennis regions, the GSDF has become an effective means to develop competitive tennis worldwide.

The Fund is designed to assist players directly, through touring teams or travel grants (now known as Grand Slam Player Grants), to gain international competitive experience. This has helped increase the number of nations represented in Grand Slam tournaments and other international competitions. The fund has contributed more than $50 million to tennis development since its inception. Notable past GSDF recipients include Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko, and Victoria Azarenka, who all went on to win Slams as both junior and senior players on tour.

Guzman, who is currently ranked No. 18 in the ITF junior rankings, will attend training camp in Paris from May 19-29 before playing the Roland Garros Junior Championships to be held May 30-June 5, also in Paris.

From Paris, Guzman will travel to London for another training camp from June 6-26. She is set to play the Junior International Roehampton tournament held June 27-July 2 to prepare for Wimbledon, which runs July 3-11.

Guzman previously played both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2019.

Guzman finished a wildly successful freshman season at OU with a team-best 19-2 singles record and career-high No. 60 ITA singles ranking. The Peruvian was an All-Big 12 singles second team selection and all-freshman team honoree. She also claimed the No. 2 position championship by virtue of compiling a league-best 7-1 record at that spot in the lineup.
