Big 12 Title Highlights Day One

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams closed out day one of the 2021 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Manhattan, Kan., Friday.

OU concluded the day with a Big 12 champion, five podium finishes, several personal records and the second-place spot after five events in the men's decathlon.

Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m. CT with the men's decathlon 110-meter hurdles. Field events will get going at 2 p.m., while running events will kick off at 3:20 p.m. Live results can be found via PrimeTime Timing. The competition will be streamed through Big 12 Now on ESPN+ beginning at 2 p.m.

Senior Lauren Jones earned the Sooners' first championship of the 2021 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, as well as the first title of the meet. Jones impressed en route to the title, throwing a personal best 217-2 (66.20m) and maintained the top spot throughout the duration of the event. The senior is the first Sooner on the women's side to win the title in the hammer throw, dating back to 1978.

On the men's side of the event, senior Edward Jeans and junior Bayley Campbell put the men's squad on the board, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Jeans threw a personal record 214-1 (65.26m), while Campbell recorded a distance of 212-2 (64.67m).

Sophomore Kayla Kurtz completed the women's javelin throw on the podium after throwing a personal best 151-3 (46.10m). The sophomore finished sixth in her championships debut.

The podium finishes continued for OU as senior Josh Haus took fourth in the men's javelin throw. Haus threw 210-7 (64.20m) in the event.

Two student-athletes represented the Sooners in the men's decathlon. Junior Kristo Simulask closed out the first day of five events in second place with 3,958 points, while junior Will Kubicek tallied 3,273 points. Simulask started the meet strong, taking first in the 100-meter dash with a 10.76. Additionally, he took first in the high jump, clearing an outdoor personal best of 6-7.5 (2.02m). Kubicek finished the five events with four personal bests. He clocked a personal record 11.33 in the men's 100 meters, 20-10 (6.36m) in the long jump, cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m) in the high jump and threw 40-7.5 (12.38m) in the shot put.
