OU Earns Six All-America Honors at NCAAs

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. — Senior Essence Thomas and sophomore Mikeisha Welcome closed out OU'sĀ indoor season at the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday evening.

The three-day championships were highlighted by two Sooners' first-team All-Americans and four second-team All-Americans.

Welcome and Thomas represented OU in the women's triple jump. The sophomore leaped 43-9.75 (13.35m) in the event, earning a first team All-America accolade. Her best mark on the day came in her last jump, securing a seventh-place finish. Thomas recorded a mark of 43-6 (13.26m), finishing in 11th and claiming second team All-America honors.Ā 

Both women made their NCAA championships debut after missing the 2020 championships one year ago today due to the pandemic.Ā 

The men's 200-meter dash results were finalized today, securing Demarius Smith's second team All-America honor. Smith competed in the prelims of the event, running a 20.97 and finished in 11th place overall.Ā
