NORMAN — Oklahoma's men's and women's track and field teams are set to begin their outdoor campaign in Fort Worth, Texas at the TCU Invitational, March 20. The meet will be held at the Lowdon Track Complex on the campus of TCU. This will be the Sooners' first outdoor meet since the 2019 season.
Outdoor season will introduce new events into the meet schedule, allowing outdoor event student-athletes the opportunity to join their indoor teammates in competition.
Saturday's action will begin with the women's discus at 9:30 a.m. CT, with men to follow. Running events will begin at 2:15 p.m. with the women's 400-meter relay and men will follow. The meet will wrap up at 5 p.m., closing out with the 4x400-meter relay.
The Sooners will travel 45 athletes to the meet. Live results can be found on Flash Results.
The TCU Invitational is the Sooners' first of six regular outdoor meets before postseason kicks off in May. OU will travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays then will take a week off before heading to Denton, Texas for the North Texas Classic. The Sooners will spend back-to-back weekends at home, hosting the Sooner Invitational and Multis and the John Jacobs Invitational. The squad will close out the regular season in Tucson, Ariz., for the Desert Heat Classic in the beginning of May.
Postseason will begin with the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Manhattan, Kan., May 14-16. The opening competition to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the NCAA West Regional, is slated for May 27-29 in College Station, Texas. The outdoor season will officially close out at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12.
NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS REWIND
Seven Sooners competed at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., March 11-13. The three-day championships were hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randal Tyson Center.
OU capped the weekend with six All-America honors — two first team All-Americans and four second team All-Americans.
Redshirt junior Vernon Turner and sophomore Mikeisha Welcome notched first team All-America accolades in the men's high jump and women's triple jump, respectively. Turner cleared 7-3 (2.21m) in the event, finishing in fourth. Welcome leaped 43-9.75 (13.35m) to secure a seventh-place finish and first-team honors.
Seniors Demarius Smith, Cooper Campbell and Essence Thomas and junior Chris Banks all earned second team All-America honors in their respective events.
Smith was the lone Sooner to compete in a running event, racing in the men's 200-meter dash. The senior clocked a 20.97, finishing 11th overall.
Thomas claimed 11th in the women's triple jump with her mark of 43-6 (13.26m).
Campbell represented OU in men's shot put, throwing 60-7.75 (18.48m) and finishing in 15th. Banks recorded a 15th-place finish in men's high jump, clearing 6-9.75 (2.08m).
UP NEXT
The Sooners will travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays, a four-day meet taking place March 24-27.
