Screen Leads Sooners on Opening Day

February 14, 2021 | Women's Golf

MELBOURNE, Fla.Ā - Hannah Screen bogeyed her third hole of the day but rallied off 15-straight pars to finish with a 1-over, 73, in the opening round of the Moon Golf Invitational. The Oklahoma junior, ranked ninth nationally, is tied for 32nd after 18 holes of play.Ā

Following Sunday's opening round, the Sooners (304, +16) are tied for 15th.Ā

"Today was a tough day for us," head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. "This round doesn't define us as a team. We need to keep our heads held high because there is still a lot of golf left this week."Ā

The Sooners carded eight bogeys in their first three holes but finished the day strong, collecting a pair of birdies late to move back into 15th.Ā

Screen led the team with a 73 (+1) in her first round of the spring. She trails the leader, No. 1 Pauline Roussin-Bouchard of South Carolina, by nine strokes entering day two.Ā

Sophomore Maria Fernanda Martinez (76, +4) led Oklahoma for most of the day, closing her front nine at even-par, but a 36 on the back nine placed her into a tie for 58th.Ā

Following the sophomore on the leaderboard was Mikhaela Fortuna, who returned to the OU lineup on Sunday morning. Her 77 gives her a share of 68th after 18 holes. Libby Winans (78, +6) and Kaitlin Milligan (79, +7) closed out the day for the Sooners and are T76 and T81, respectively.Ā

The Sooners return to the par-72, 6,383-yard Duran Golf Club on Monday for Moon Golf's second round. Drouin-Luttrell's team will tee off on round two with North Carolina and Coastal Carolina from 7:50 to 8:30 on Monday morning.Ā
