OU Tallies 22 Victories at All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma's men's tennis team's run at the ITA All-American Championships came to an end Friday on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

The Sooners tallied 22 victories over the course of the tournament with student-athletes competing in pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draws.

"All of our guys played and competed with a lot of confidence and self-belief," head coach Nick Crowell said. "The work these guys have done and their commitment is paying off. We look forward to getting back to work this next week and continuing to build each week."

Senior Mason Beiler represented OU in the singles main draw, tallying a first-round win over No. 25 Axel Nefve of Notre Dame, 6-3, 7-5. He then went on notch his second-ranked victory of the week, downing No. 16 Connor Thomson (South Carolina), 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the round of 16. The senior edged out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Michigan's Jacob Bickersteth before falling 2-6, 4-6 to No. 28 August Holmgren of San Diego. Beiler's quarterfinals run is the Sooners' best since 2015 when Alex Ghilea reached the semifinals in the competition.

"Mason's run this week was historic," Crowell said. "Only a few guys have made the quarterfinals at this event and that is a testament to his dedication and work ethic. His mental toughness was on display all week and he continues to improve every time he takes the court."

Welsh Hotard, Mark Mandlik and Justin Schlageter went undefeated in the pre-qualifying draw to advance to the qualifying bracket. The team tallied 14 wins on 17 matches throughout pre-qualifying competition. Five players represented the Sooners in the singles qualifying draw, tying Texas A&M with the most players in the draw.

In the qualifying round, Alex Martinez and Hotard tallied first-round victories, while Nathan Han and Mandlik registered individual wins in the consolation round. Baptiste Anselmo and Mandlik paired up to defeat Brown/Sokolovskiy (Charlotte), 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

The Sooners are set to take the court again at the ITA Central Region Championships in Lincoln, Neb., beginning Oct. 21.
