NORMAN – Two Sooners have garnered ITA Central Region accolades, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday. Freshman
Mark Mandlik was named regional Rookie of the Year while
Mason Beiler was tabbed Player to Watch, the award given annually to the top returning player in each of the ITA's districts.
"Both of these guys ar two of the hardest workers we've had in our program," said head coach
Nick Crowell. "They do all the little things on a daily basis that make you successful and I'm happy to see them both get rewarded for their outstanding effort, discipline and performance on the court."
Mandlik's debut season saw him a team-best 17-6 combined spring and fall record. Mandlik compiled an 8-2 record in dual match singles playing primarily on court three. The Delray Beach, Fla., native opened the season on a six-match winning streak. He also tallied a 5-4 record in doubles playing with
Jake Van Emburgh and
Jochen Bertsch.
During the fall tournament slate, Mandlik went 9-4 in singles and advanced to the final at the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall. Additionally, he made a run to the quarterfinals at the ITA Central Region Championships.
2020 marks the third consecutive year a Sooner has been named Rookie of the year after
Jake Van Emburgh received the award in 2018 and Beiler won it in 2019.
Beiler, a sophomore, went 15-9 on the year. He tallied a 7-4 record in dual matches, playing primarily on court two and notched six of his singles wins in straight sets. Beiler clinched four matches for the Sooners, including the last three consecutively. He ended the season on a four-match winning streak.
Beiler saw tremendous success in fall tournament play. He opened the season with a consolation finals appearance at the Battle in the Bay, where he racked up three wins over three ranked opponents in No. 86 Luc Fomba (TCU), No. 32 Gui Osorio (San Diego) and No. 39 Parker Wynn (Texas Tech).
He also made a run to the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Central Region Championships and earned a bid to the ITA National Fall Championships.
Beiler earned his first career ranking following the fall slate, entering at No. 50 nationally. Additionally, he earned first team Academic All-Big 12 honors for his work in the classroom.
Beiler's Player to Watch award also marks the fourth straight year an OU player has earned the accolade following
Spencer Papa (2017), Alex Bakshi (2018) and Van Emburgh (2019).
Beiler, Mandlik and the Sooners went 11-4 before the season ended early due to COVID-19.
The national winners of the ITA awards will be announced next Monday during a special virtual awards ceremony.
