The Year That Was: Women's Tennis

March 23, 2020 | Women's Tennis

For the Oklahoma women's tennis team, the spring 2020 season took on a greater purpose from the start. After losing volunteer assistant coach Parker Ross in January, the Sooners dedicated the season to their mentor and friend. And that they did. Little by little, OU was building a season for the books.

The Sooners had momentum in Big 12 play after downing TCU and Texas Tech during the first weekend of conference action and winning five straight matches to close out the season. OU had been flawless in doubles, claiming the point in every contest they played.

The season was full of bright moments and had promising potential as conference play kicked off. It would be easy to wonder what might have been, but today we'll reflect on what was and the 11 matches we were fortunate enough to play as we take a pause from sport to care for our community and world.

The Sooners were picked fourth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll, their highest preseason ranking since Coach Audra Cohen's arrival in 2017.

Oleksandra Korashvili and Jasmine Asghar were ranked as high as No. 12 nationally in doubles on Feb. 5. The duo posted a 5-2 record in dual matches this season and was 14-1 in fall tournaments for a 19-3 record in 2019-20.

OU racked up five consecutive victories to close the year, including wins in the first two conference matches of the season.

The Sooners tallied sweeps of three opponents this season, including a 4-0 rout of Illinois on the road.

Freshman Carmen Corley led the Sooners in singles wins with seven. In her first match after joining the team in January, Corley upset the No. 96-ranked player in the nation 6-2, 6-3.

OU won all 11 doubles points it played this season. Camila Romero and Martina Capurro clinched five of those, the most of any doubles duo.

Sisters Ivana and Carmen Corley went 10-0 in doubles, playing primarily at the No. 1 line. The duo clinched three doubles points and gave up fewer than three games in all but three matches this season.

One coach inspired the team this season. The Sooners were faced with the sudden loss of their coach and mentor Parker Ross at the start of dual matches and chose to dedicate their season to his memory and motto, "little by little."
