NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams concluded day one of the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa, holding sixth and fifth place, respectively. The Sooners recorded 17 personal bests and advanced eight squad members to the final round of their respective events.
The Sooners began the two-day meet with the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon. Sophomore Madison Langley-Walker finished seventh with a personal-record 3,634 points. Within the pentathlon, the sophomore set a personal record in the shot put, advancing her mark to 8.99m. Langley-Walker improved her finish by two spots from last year's indoor championships, in addition to jumping from the No. 6 spot to the No. 5 spot on OU's all-time performance list.
After four events in the men's heptathlon, sophomore Kristo Simulask sits in fourth place with 3,186 points. Simulask tied for second in high jump, clearing 2.02m. Freshman Eli Darrough joined Simulask in the multi event, finishing day one with 2,591 points. Heptathlon action will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.
Junior Jai'Lyn Merriweather set a personal record and advanced to the second round of the women's 600-yards. Merriweather clocked in at 1:23.17, improving her previous record by .02 seconds. The event's second round will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
In the women's 400-meter dash, sophomore Kennedy Blackmon was the lone Sooner to compete in the event. The sophomore set a personal-record time of 54.82, finishing in the top eight which was good enough to advance to the finals round of competition at 3 p.m.Saturday.
On the men's side of the 60-meter hurdles, the Sooners advanced senior Bryce Douglas to the finals round following his 8.05 time, which was good for sixth place. Douglas will compete again Saturday at 1:40 p.m. Redshirt sophomore Isaiah Levingston and junior Garry Williams finished ninth and tenth, respectively. Levingston crossed the line at 8.05, while Williams finished in 8.14.
Senior Jackson Webb completed the men's 60-meter dash prelims in 6.70, earning a second-place finish. Webb was joined by junior Joseph Sheffield in the top four, clocking in at 6.74. Both Webb and Sheffield advanced to the finals round that will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m.
In the men's 800-meter run, junior Ackeen Colley led the way for the Sooners with a second-place finish and 1:50.19 time. Colley was joined by a duo of teammates in the top 10. Redshirt sophomore Johnelle Joe will join Colley in the finals round following his 1:52.04 time. Redshirt freshman Joshua Dick's 1:52.94 time was good for a tenth-place finish. The duo will take the track at 3:50 p.m.
The squad's eighth athlete of the day to advance to finals competition was junior Ja'Leesa Giles. Giles completed the women's 200-meter dash prelims in 24.1, earning a spot in the second round. The junior will race the event again at 4 p.m. Giles was joined by fellow junior Dai'Lyn Merriweather in the race. Merriweather notched a top-10 finish, clocking in at 24.23.
Sheffield qualified for the finals in his second event on the day, notching a third-place finish in the men's 200-meter dash. The junior's 21.03 time was good for a personal record and advanced his spot on OU's all-time performance list from the ninth spot to No. 5. Fellow junior Demarius Smith joined Sheffield in the top 10, crossing the line at 21.31. Sheffield will compete in the finals tomorrow at 4:10 p.m.
A trio of Sooners competed in the men's weight throw, earning a trio of personal records. Sophomore Bayley Campbell led the way, throwing 64-10.5 (19.77m). The senior's throw earned him fourth place and improved his standing on OU's all-time performance list, jumping one spot to No. 2. Junior Edward Jeans finished one spot behind Campbell, recording a 59-11.25 (18.27m) mark. Freshman Diego Trevino followed the trend, finishing in the top 10 with a 52-7.25 (16.03m) throw. Trevino's mark boosted his standing on the all-time performance list from No. 9 to eight.
Junior Rayvon Allen set a personal record in the men's long jump with a 25-3.25 (7.70) mark, claiming third place. Allen improved his spot on OU's all-time performance list from the eighth spot to No. 5. Williams and redshirt sophomore Jelaani Davis notched seventh and eighth place, respectively. Williams leaped 23-10 (7.26m), while Davis recorded a personal-record 23-4.75 (7.13) mark.
Elien Vekemans made her Big 12 Indoor Championship debut, claiming fourth in the women's pole vault. The freshman cleared 13-7.25 (4.15m) in the event. Senior Meagan Gray finished one spot behind Vekemans, recording a 13-7.25 (4.15m) mark.
In the women's weight throw, junior Lauren Jones threw 62-7.25 (19.08m), notching a sixth-place finish.
The women's long jump squad finished two Sooners in the top 10. Junior Essence Thomas leaped 20-0.5 (6.11m), earning sixth place, while sophomore Symone Washington finished one spot behind Thomas with a jump of 19-10.25 (6.05m).
On the track, junior Camri Austin completed the first round of the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.48, earning ninth place.
The women's distance-medley relay team clocked in at 12:36.61, earning eighth place. On the men's side, the squad checked in at 10:08.85, claiming an eighth-place finish.

The Sooners with qualifying marks will travel to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., March 13-14. The rest of the team will prepare for the start of the outdoor season, beginning with the Baldy Castillo Invitational on March 20-21 in Tempe, Ariz.
