January 21, 2020 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – Newcomer Carmen Corley of the Oklahoma women's tennis team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

In the very first match of her OU career, unranked Corley upset No. 69 Selma Cadar (Miami), 6-2, 6-2 on day one at the Miami Invite over the past weekend. Corley tallied three more wins across singles and doubles at the event.

Corley grabbed another singles win when she held on to defeat the Wildcats' Clarissa Hand 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.  In doubles, Corley and her sister, Ivana Corley, defeated Anna Ross and Emma Kurtz (Vanderbilt) 6-2. The Corley sisters took Cadar and Perez-Somarriba of Miami to the wire, falling just short of 2019 singles national champion Perez-Somarriba and Cadar, 7-6 (5).

The award is the first Big 12 Award for Oklahoma's spring 2020 season.

Coming up, the Sooners head to NC State for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The winners of the matches will play each other Jan. 26 with the chance to play at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships (held Feb. 7) in Champaign, Ill.
