Season Begins Saturday in Miami

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's tennis team is set to open their 2020 spring season this weekend at the Miami Invite. The individual tournament will take place at the University of Miami from Saturday, January 18 through Monday, January 20.

THE 2020 SOONERS

Oklahoma returns every player from last year's squad in seniors Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili; juniors Martina Capurro, Nina Jabrzemski, Skyler Miller, and Camila Romero; and sophomores Ivana Corley and Kianah Motosono. OU is joined by newcomer Marcelina Podlinska, a sophomore who made her debut in the fall, and freshmen Carmen Corley (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Macey Miller (Norman, Okla.).
 
Martina Capurro represents OU in the ITA singles rankings at No. 87. The Sooners' doubles team of Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili is ranked in at No. 27 in the ITA's doubles release.
 
Head coach Audra Cohen is set to begin her fourth year with the Sooners. Cohen has amassed a 46-29 overall record at the helm for OU. As the Sooners head to Miami this weekend, Cohen will be returning to her alma mater where she was inducted into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

2019 IN REVIEW

The Sooners finished their 2019 season with a 17-9 overall record. The team made its first NCAA appearance since 2015, advancing to the second round. 
 
In 2019, OU had a program record four All-Big 12 selections in first-team honoree Korashvili; second-team selections Capurro and Romero; and first-team All-Big 12 doubles team Capurro and Romero.
 
Korashvili was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year as well as the ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year.

THE TOURNAMENT FIELD

To start off their 2020 season the Hurricanes are ranked No. 23 in the preseason ITA rankings. Miami went 19-8 in their 2019 season.
 
Miami returns three players from the 2019 squad, including senior Estela Perez-Somarriba, who was the NCAA Singles Championship title winner in 2019. Perez-Somarriba is currently ranked third nationally to start the spring.
 
Joining Perez-Somarriba in the ITA singles rankings is freshman Selma Cadar, who is ranked No. 69.
 
Vanderbilt enters the 2020 season at No. 10. Vanderbilt finished their 2019 season with a 19-8 overall record. 
 
Vanderbilt's sophomore Georgia Drummy is ranked No. 22 and senior Cristina Rosca is No. 32.
 
Northwestern is returning six of their players from their 2018-2019 team and welcoming two new players to this season's team. The Wildcats went 15-11 overall in 2019.
