Two Titles for OU on Opening Weekend

September 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded the first weekend of the season with titles at both the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Wahoowa Invite as Oleksandra Korashvili and Jasmine Asghar taking the doubles title in Milwaukee and Skyler Miller won her singles draw in Charlottesville.

Asghar and Korashvili held on for an 8-6 win over Syracuse's Miranda Ramirez and Guzal Yusupova. The Sooners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest before Ramirez and Yusupova closed the gap and tied it at 6-all. Asghar and Korasvhili held strong for their first title as a duo.

The OU seniors' road to the title included a first-round win over Brindtha Ramasamy and Laura Rico (Miami-Ohio) 8-3; an 8-6 win over Arizona's Gitte Heynemans and Kayla Wilkins in the second round; and an 8-2 rout of Martina Kudelova and Radka Buzkova of FAU in the quarterfinals.

Asghar and Korashvili upset No. 3 seed and ITA No. 18 Angela Kulikov and Danielle Wilson (USC) 8-6 in the semifinal.

With their victory, Asghar and Korashvili punched their ticket to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif., Nov. 6-10.

"I'm so proud of how Sasha and Jaz worked together this weekend," said head coach Audra Cohen. "When one was struggling, the other was there for her. Throughout this event we talked a lot about enjoying the moment and they did a great job doing that all weekend."

Elsewhere in the tournament, Korashvili and Martina Capurro both made runs to the singles round of 16 while Asghar and Camila Romero advanced to the second round.

At the Wahoowa Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia, Skyler Miller cruised through her draw to earn her first singles title as a Sooner. Miller took out Virginia's Camille Favero, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 [5] in the first round before defeating Stephanie Schrage (Princeton) in the quarterfinals.

The Sooner rolled past Illinois' Emily Casati, 6-3, 6-4 in the semi to set up a meeting with Virginia's Amber O'Dell. Miller held on to win the final in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 [7].

"I'm very proud of Sky and the way she composed herself this weekend," said assistant coach Amy Sargeant. "She's been dedicated to putting in work all summer, which was very evident in her first tournament of the fall."

Sooners picked up seven more wins elsewhere in the tournament. Newcomer Marcelina Podlinska went 2-1, grabbing her first collegiate victory over Maia Sung (Princeton) 6-1, 6-2 in her draw's consolation quarterfinal.

Kianah Motosono advanced to the semifinals of her draw and compiled a 2-2 record at the tournament. Ivana Corley picked up a win over Illinois' Sasha Belaya 7-5, 6-1 in consolation.

In doubles, Corley and Motosono took out Princeton's Sung and Stephanie Schrage, 8-7 (7), and Miller and Podlinska teamed up for an 8-6 win over Emilee Duong and Ashley Yeah (Illinois).
