Beiler Shines in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Oklahoma sophomore Mason Beiler was unstoppable over the weekend, racking up four wins over ranked opponents at the Battle in the Bay hosted by the University of San Francisco.

Beiler fell to USC's Ryder Jackson in the round of 32, 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-3, but quickly bounced back in consolation to make a run to the final. In the consolation round of 16, Beiler made quick work of San Francisco's Paul Giraud, 6-1, 6-3, then took out conference rival and ITA No. 86 Luc Fomba of TCU, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

The sophomore held on for a 6-3, 7-5 semifinals victory over No. 32 Gui Osorio (San Diego), 6-3, 7-5, to set up a meeting with another conference foe in Parker Wynn from Texas Tech.

In the final, the unranked Beiler edged No.39 Wynn 6-3, 6-4 to take fifth at the tournament.

Beiler also saw success in doubles action. Paired with Stanford's William Genesen, Beiler advanced to the semifinals.

The duo opened the tournament with an upset of top-seeded Alistair Gray and Jacob Fearnley of TCU, who were ranked No. 22 nationally, 8-7 (1). In the quarterfinals, Beiler and Genesen rolled past Victor
Krustev and Joseph Rotheram of UC Santa Barbara 8-3 before falling to Jackson and Riley Smith (USC) in a tight semifinal 8-7 (4).

On the opposite coast, Max Stewart, Matt Rodriguez, Jochen Bertsch and Mark Mandlik had a successful weekend at the Battle at the Beach in Destin, Fla., tallying 10 wins at the tournament.

In singles, Mandlik, Rodriguez and Stewart all went 2-1, while Bertsch went 1-2. The Sooners picked up three doubles victories in Destin. Rodriguez and Bertsch took out Tulane's Akos Kotorman and Henry Lovett, 8-5 and Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar and Enzo LeSeguillan (FSU), 8-4. Mandlik and Stewart got an 8-5 win over Tim Ruetzel and Benji Jacobson (Tulane).

The Sooners are home next week for the Norman Futures 25k at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
