OU Takes Texas Tech to the Wire

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 17 Oklahoma men's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to No. 23 Texas Tech Sunday in Lubbock.

The Sooners (14-7, 1-2 Big 12) trailed 3-1 in the match before using a pair of singles wins to tie it at 3-all, but ultimately fell to the Red Raiders.

OU gave up the doubles point to start the match. Alex Bakshi and Spencer Papa fell to No. 4 Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn 6-2 on court one. Jochen Bertsch and Stefano Tsorotiotis were defeated by Matheus Leite and Ilgiz Valiev 6-2 at the No. 3 line.

When play was halted, Jake Van Emburgh and Ferran Calvo were tied with Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov at 3-all.

In singles, Texas Tech took a 3-0 lead in the match. OU's Bertsch fell to Franco Ribero 6-2, 6-0 on court five. On court three, Calvo was defeated by Valiev 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

No. 33 Papa put the Sooners on the board with a win over No. 94 Wynn. Papa took the first set handily, winning 6-4 before Wynn forced a tiebreaker in the second. The senior came out on top, 7-6 (7) to secure his fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.

No. 57 Van Emburgh took down Mylnikov in a three-setter to cut Texas Tech's lead to 3-2. Van Emburgh took set one 6-3 but Mylnikov fired back to claim the second 6-3. Van Emburgh closed out the final set 6-3.

Stewart tied the match at 3-all with a victory over Artem Kapshuk. Stewart won the first 6-4 but dropped the second to Kapshuk 7-6 (3). The sophomore gave up just one game in the third to take it 6-1.

The match came down to court four, where Mason Beiler fell to Bjorn Thomson 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

OU returns to the Headington Family Tennis Center to close out conference play with TCU on April 12, followed by Texas April 14. The Sooners will honor seniors Bakshi, Calvo and Papa prior to the Texas match.
