NORMAN – For the second time this season, Spencer Papa of the Oklahoma men's tennis team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Papa shares the honor with Texas' Christian Sigsgaard.
The senior grabbed two wins against ranked opponents in OU's 6-1 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener.
In doubles, Papa and Alex Bakshi took down No. 37 Maxim Tybar and Mathieu Scaglia 7-5 to keep the Sooners alive in the doubles point. In singles, the Oklahoma native defeated No. 68 Matej Vocel 6-4, 6-1 to break Vocel's six-match winning streak. Papa's win was good for his second consecutive against a ranked opponent and fourth this season.
This is the fourth conference weekly honor of Papa's career and the second for the Sooners this season after the senior was named Player of the Week for January 29.
Papa is currently ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA singles release and No. 60 in doubles alongside Jake Van Emburgh.
The No. 17 Sooners continue Big 12 play at Baylor Friday at 6 p.m. CT, followed by a Sunday meeting with Texas Tech at 1 p.m.
