NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's and women's track and field team wrapped up its third day of competition at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday.
Through Friday evening, the Oklahoma relay teams have highlighted competition for the Sooners. The men's and women's 4x100-meter relays and the women's 4x400-meter relay team ran in preliminary heats on Friday. Sophomores Camri Austin, Dai'Lyn Merriweather and Ja'Leesa Giles teamed up with freshman Kennedy Blackmon to finish in 45.31 for fourth place in the women's 4x100 prelims, while junior Jackson Webb, sophomore Joseph Sheffield, junior Xavier Brown and freshman Zac Martin finished the men's 4x100 prelim in 40.11 and seventh place. Both squads advance to finals on Saturday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. CT. Blackmon, D. Merriweather, Giles and sophomore Jai'Lyn Merriweather represented Oklahoma in the women's 4x400-meter relay, crossing the line with a third-best 3:41.47 for a spot in Saturday's 4:30 p.m. finals race.
The Sooner relay teams were not the only to earn qualifying marks on the track Friday. Sheffield ran a personal-best 10.24 (3.0) in prelims to claim a spot in the finals of the men's 100-meter dash around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. Webb missed the finals cut by one-tenth of a second, recording a personal-best 10.41 (2.4) in his preliminary heat.
Austin narrowly missed the cut in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing 10th with a time of 13.37 (2.7). Junior Bryce Douglas ran the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.30, taking 15th place in the prelims.
Action began for the Sooners at the Texas Relays on Wednesday when redshirt senior Makayla Stephens opened the women's heptathlon. Stephens completed the event Thursday, finishing in 14th place with a total of 4,955 points.
Thursday also saw the Sooners wrap up the men's hammer and javelin throws. Freshman Bayley Campbell threw the hammer 217-5 (66.27m) for sixth place, while sophomore Edward Jeans finished in 13th with a throw of 202-2 (61.63m). Campbell moves to second place on OU's all-time top-10 list, less than a half-meter from the school record.
Sophomore Josh Haus claimed seventh place in section B of the men's javelin throw with a mark of 204-4 (62.29m), while redshirt junior Gabby Kearney took ninth in section B of the women's javelin on Friday with a throw of 151-8 (46.23m).
Oklahoma had strong finishes in several of Friday's field events. Junior Roman Mason leapt a personal-record 53-8.5 (16.37m) (2.1) to finish second among collegiate competitors in section A of the men's triple jump, while sophomore Garry Williams also finished second among collegiate competition in section B with a jump of 51-0.75 (15.56m) (1.0). In section B of the women's triple jump, sophomore Essence Thomas took eighth place, leaping 40-1.25 (12.22m) (2.9).
A pair of Sooners finished ninth in section B of their events. Senior Sydney King cleared a personal-record 13-9.75 (4.21m) in the women's pole vault. The height was the third highest mark in the section, but King finished in a tie for ninth by virtue of attempts. Junior Brad Daboub picked up ninth place in section B of the men's shot put with a toss of 56-0.5 (17.08m).
Mason's second-place finish wrapped up the third day of the Texas Relays for the Sooners, but five student-athletes are still set to run for OU Friday night on the West Coast. Oklahoma has runners slated to compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, women's 5,000-meter invitational, men's mile run and men's 10,000-meter run at the UCLA Bob Larsen Distance Carnival in Los Angeles. Senior Sarah Scott opens the meet for OU in the steeplechase at 8:20 p.m. CT.
The Sooners finish up the 92nd annual Texas Relays on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. when sophomore Falyn Reaugh makes her outdoor debut in section A of the women's high jump. Oklahoma will compete in a variety of finals and invitational races on the track, as well as sections A of the women's discus and shot put.
Live coverage continues from the Texas Relays through ESPN3 and Longhorn Network from 1:30-5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
