NORMAN – The No. 20 Oklahoma men's tennis team swept No. 46 USF 7-0 Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center as Nick Crowell earned his 50th win as a head coach and 50th at the helm for OU.
“Today was a tough day for us coming off a road trip for spring break. I thought our guys rebounded really well,” said Crowell. “The guys were really professional. They were really gritty on every court. We didn't lose a match and that's what you want to see.
It was good to get the doubles point, and now we're just building for conference play.
OU (13-5) made quick work of the Bulls in doubles, then added singles victories at every spot in the lineup.
USF forfeited at No. 3 doubles, and OU's Ferran Calvo and Jake Van Emburgh quickly picked up a 6-3 victory over Chase Ferguson and Sergio Gomez Montesa on court two to claim the point for the Sooners.
When play was halted, Alex Bakshi and Spencer Papa were locked in at 4-all with No. 46 Alberto Barroso-Campos and Pierre Luquet on court one.
The Bulls forfeited court six in singles to give OU a 2-0 lead in the match. No. 88 Van Emburgh struck first with a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Ferguson at the No. 2 line.
Mason Beiler tallied his seventh straight win and 10th this season when he took down Gomez Montesa 6-4, 6-1 on court four. With his victory, the freshman leads OU in singles wins.
Jochen Bertsch made quick work of Tobias Sonne on court four, winning 6-2, 6-2.
No. 54 Papa held on for a three-set victory on court one to hand No. 19 Barroso-Campos just his second loss of the season. Papa gave up the first set 6-1 before firing back to take the second 6-3. The Sooner dominated the deciding frame 6-1 to claim his third win over a ranked opponent this season.
“I was really proud of Spencer, being down 6-1, 3-1 and coming back to win,” said Crowell. “That was a huge turning point in the match and for Spencer's confidence.”
Calvo completed the sweep with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Luquet on court three.
OU opens Big 12 play at home with Oklahoma State on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. CT.
