NORMAN – For the fourth time this season and the third consecutive week, Oleksandra Korashvili of the Oklahoma women's tennis team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Korashvili shares the honor with Oklahoma State's Marina Guinart.
The junior picked up two wins at the top spot in singles and a doubles shutout over the Sooners' first weekend of Big 12 play. Then-No. 40 Korashvili downed Kansas State's Margot Decker 6-3, 6-4 Friday before handing Kansas' No. 34 Rychagova her first loss of the season Sunday.
Korashvili dominated the matchup with Rychagova, giving up just one game to win set one 6-1 and taking the second 6-2. Rychagova had previously won 10 straight matches.
In doubles against Kansas State, Korashvili and partner Kianah Motosono shut out Ioanna Gheorgita and Maria Linares at the No. 3 line to set the Sooners up for the doubles point.
Korashvili has now won seven straight singles matches and has five wins over ranked opponents this season. Three of those have come over top-25 opponents as the Odessa, Ukraine, native has knocked off the No. 7, No. 15 and No. 17 players over the course of the season. Korashvili remains undefeated (6-0) at the top spot.
The junior vaulted 21 spots in the latest ITA singles rankings to achieve a new career-high No. 19.
Korashvili is now tied with five players in Big 12 history who have won the award three times in a single season, but is the only player to ever earn three consecutive Big 12 Player of the Week selections.
The award is OU's fifth this season after Camila Romero earned conference accolades on Feb. 12. With five Big 12 Players of the week, the Sooners lead the conference in selections this season.
Korashvili and the Sooners continue Big 12 play this weekend at West Virginia Friday and Iowa State on Sunday.
