NORMAN – The No. 24 Oklahoma men's tennis team opened the weekend with a 4-1 win over in-state foe and No. 45 Tulsa Friday night at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Tulsa took the doubles point, but OU (9-3) bounced back in singles to capture the match.
"We knew Tulsa was going to come in here and be a really tough match," said head coach Nick Crowell. "I was really proud of our guys coming back again after dropping the doubles point. I was really happy with how our guys rebounded in the singles and into the middle of the match we started to play well and put them away at the end."
In doubles, Jake Van Emburgh and Max Stewart fell to Joshua Goodger and Tom Thelwall-Jones 6-4 on court two. Alex Bakshi and Ferran Calvo dropped to Jarod Hing and Boriss Kamdem after a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and Tulsa opened the match with a 1-0 lead.
When play was halted, Jochen Bertsch and Stefano Tsorotiotis were also in a tiebreaker with Daniel Siddall and Kody Pearson.
Max Stewart was the first Sooner off the court in singles, taking down Siddell 6-2, 6-1. The first set was tied a 2-all before Stewart took over and won four straight games to close out the frame, then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in set two before Siddell got on the board.
Van Emburgh struck next with a 7-6 (7), 6-1 win at the No. 2 line. After a tight first frame, the sophomore dominated set two for his third consecutive victory.
Bakshi put away No. 84 Majed Kilani 6-4, 7-5 for his third win over a ranked opponent this season. Bakshi took set one 6-4 after tying the frame at every game up to four. The senior held on to win set two 7-5. With the victory, Baskhi remains undefeated (4-0) at the top spot.
Calvo clinched the win when he downed Hing in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 3 line. After giving up the first set, Calvo took over the second frame after tying it at 4-all and winning the next two games. The Sooner went up 3-0 in the final set and gave up just one game to end the match.
When play was abandoned, Mason Beiler was in a third set with Stefan Hampe, leading 2-0. The freshman rolled through set one 6-1 before Hampe took set two in a tiebreaker 7-6 (6) to force a third.
Jochen Bertsch was also in a third set on court four, where he trailed Pearson 5-2. Bertsch gave up the first 6-1 but fired back to capture set two 6-4.
