NORMAN – The Oklahoma tennis team grabbed three doubles wins and a singles victory from
Matt Rodriguez to open the ITA Central Region Championships Thursday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
All three teams received byes in the round of 64. In the round of 32, Rodriguez and
Jochen Bertsch got the first win of the day, making quick work of Armando Gandini and Luke Moorhead of Creighton, 8-3.
Jake Van Emburgh and
Mark Mandlik held on to beat Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse (UMKC) in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3).
Mason Beiler and
Max Stewart took out Creighton's Stratton Brown and Joe Hoff, 8-4 to advance.
In singles, Rodriguez topped Mac Mease (Creighton), 7-5, 6-1.The remainder of the Sooners received first-round byes and will join Rodriguez in the round of 64.
Play continues at 8 a.m. CT tomorrow with the doubles round of 16, followed by the singles rounds of 32 and 16. Admission is free to the public.
