NORMAN – Four Sooners punched their tickets to the singles round of 16 Saturday at the ITA Central Region Championships as
Martina Capurro,
Oleksandra Korashvili, Marcelina Podlinska and
Camila Romero all grabbed wins.
Capurro took out Luniuska Delgado of Kansas 6-3, 6-4. The junior will face another conference opponent tomorrow in Kansas State's Maria Linares in the round of 16.
No.1-overall seed Korashvili punched her ticket to the round of 16 as she held on for a three-set win over Roxana Manu (Kansas). After dropping the first set 7-5, Korashvili rallied to take the next two 6-2, 6-2. The senior will meet Rosanna Maffei (Kansas State) tomorrow.
Sophomore Marcelina Podlinska defeated Kelly Keller (Arkansas) to move on. Podlinska won the first set handily, 6-2, before Keller rallied in the second to force a tiebreaker. Podlinska dominated the tiebreaker to win the second frame 7-6 (0). The newcomer gets No. 2-seed Lisa-Marie Rioux (OSU) in a Bedlam battle.
Romero won a thriller over Jackie Carr (Arkansas), holding on to take the match in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Romero will take on Iowa's Elise Van Hevuelen Treadwell in the round of 16.
Two doubles teams also moved on to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins Saturday. Romero and Capurro started the day with an 8-4 win over Liza Petushkova and Maria Tatarnikova (Drake) in the round of 32 before taking out conference foes Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh of Iowa State 8-5. The duo is set to face Arkansas' Martina Zerulo and Carr in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Korashvili and Asghar topped UCA's Fuka Nonoyama and Maja Gledic 8-4 in the round of 32, then defeated another Big 12 pair in Kansas' Sonia Smagina and Manu, 8-5. Korashvili and Asghar, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will meet No.5 Catherine Gulihur and Alana Wolf (OSU) tomorrow.
Motosono and
Skyler Miller's run came to an end in the round of 32 as the pair dropped a tightly contested match the Julia Deming and Luniuska Delgado (Kansas), 8-7 (2).
Play begins at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow with the doubles quarterfinals, followed by singles round of 16 and quarterfinals. More information can be found at the
