NORMAN – Spencer Papa of the Oklahoma men's tennis team has been named Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Papa paced the Sooners from the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles during ITA Kickoff weekend. Against Notre Dame, the redshirt senior earned an upset victory, defeating the No. 16 Alex Ledbedev of Notre Dame in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Papa never trailed in the match.
In the Sooners' contest with Drake, unranked Papa and partner Jake Van Emburgh made quick work of No. 27 Vinny Gillespie and Barny Thorold, giving up just one game to win 6-1.
This is the third conference weekly honor for Papa, who was last named player of the week on Feb. 28, 2017. The award is the first for Oklahoma this season.
Papa and the Sooners head to Michigan Saturday for their first road contest of the season. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
