OU Heads to Nashville for ITA Kickoff

NORMAN – For the second straight year, the Oklahoma women's tennis team will play in ITA Kickoff Weekend, with the Sooners headed to Nashville. No. 2-seed OU will face No. 3 Winthrop in the first round on Jan. 25 while host and top-seeded Vanderbilt and No. 4 Memphis square off on the other side of the bracket.

The winners of those matches will play each other Jan. 27 with a trip to the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships (held Feb. 8-11 in Seattle, Wash.) on the line.

Last Time Out

The Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2019 season with a pair of wins, defeating SMU 4-3 and Oral Roberts 5-0 at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Newcomer Martina Capurro led the way for OU, picking up wins in both of her matches at the top spot. Capurro took down SMU's Liza Buss 6-3, 6-4 in her OU debut, then gave up just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oral Roberts' Gorana Kadijevic.

Playing on court three, sophomore Camila Romero also went undefeated on the weekend. Romero clinched OU's win over SMU with a gritty 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win before shutting out Jovana Antonijevic of ORU, 6-0, 6-0.

Two more Sooners got their first wins in the Crimson and Cream against Oral Roberts. At No. 2, Oleksandra Korashvili powered past Ceijenia Cornelius 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Kianah Motosono also recorded a shutout of Andrea Vasiljevic on court six.

Scouting Winthrop

Winthrop enters the weekend at 1-0 after beating William & Mary 4-3 in its season-opener. The Eagles went 20-6 in 2018 and a perfect 8-0 in Big South Conference play to claim the league title. Winthrop advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Lauren Proctor is Winthop's representative in the ITA singles rankings, where she checks in at No. 66. Proctor and Megan Kauffman are No. 22 in the doubles rankings.

Scouting Memphis

Memphis will open the season Friday against Vanderbilt. In 2018, the Tigers went 16-8 overall with an undefeated (7-0) home record.

Memphis returns five players from last season, including Laura Bente, who compiled a 7-5 record during the fall season. Lina Hohnhold went 6-2 during the tournament slate.

Scouting Vanderbilt

Ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA release, Vanderbilt will open the dual match season Friday with Memphis. The Commodores are coming off an NCAA runner-up finish in 2018. Last season saw Vanderbilt an SEC regular-season championship and a 27-4 overall record.

Vanderbilt's roster features five players ranked in the latest ITA singles release: No. 6 Fernanda Contreras; No. 15 Christina Rosca; No. 26 Amanda Meyer; No. 42 Emily Smith; and No. 71 Carolyn Campana.

In doubles, Contreras and Summer Dvorak are No. 25. Dvorak and Rosca check in at No. 26, while Campana and Smith are No. 56.

Match Info

OU opens the tournament with Winthrop at 10 a.m. CT on Friday.

The consolation match is set for 8 a.m. CT, while the championship will be played at 12 p.m.
