Corley and Asghar on to ITA All-American Qualifier

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. – Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley advanced to the qualifying draw by virtue of an 8-6 victory over Florida's Ida Jarlskog and McCartney Kessler to close out the prequalifying rounds at the Riveria/ITA Women's All-American Championships Sunday.

Asghar and Corley earned a spot in the qualifying draw with a final-round win over Florida's Ida Jarlskog and McCartney Kessler, 8-6.

"I'm very proud of Ivana and Jasmine for stepping up and play agressive tennis on the big points today. It's great to see them improve and grow their confidence in eah other with every match they play," said head coach Audra Cohen.

The duo's path to qualifying included a win in the round of 32 by virtue of a withdrawal, which set up a round of 16 meeting with UCLA's Ayan Broomfield and Alaina Miller, whom they defeated, 8-6, to advance to the qualifying round.

Newcomer Martina Capurro was also in action, making a run to the qualifying round in singles. Capurro grabbed an opening round win over Pepperdine's Dzina Milovanovic, 6-3, 6-4, and a victory over Linda Huang of Rice, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to move to the final stage of the prequalifying draw.

In her last match, Capurro was defeated by LSU's Keenan Johnson, 6-2, 6-3.

"Martina has learned so much from this week, and while today didn't go her way, she's gained valuable confidence for her future collegiate career," said Cohen.

Asghar also played in the singles draw, suffering a first round defeat at the hands of Wisconsin's Lexi Keberle, 6-4, 6-0. The junior picked up a win in the consolation bracket, taking down Alisa Soloveva (Winthrop) in a three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Corley and Asghar will begin qualifying action tomorrow, facing Florida's Victoria Emma and Tsveta Dimirtrova in the opening round.
