Sooners Conclude Successful Opening Weekend

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded a successful opening weekend of fall tournamnets on Sunday, totalling 18 singles and doubles wins between the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Rice Invite.

Milwaukee Tennis Classic

The Sooners put together an impressive performance at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, highlighted by a doubles finals appearance by Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley.

The pair advanced to the championship by virtue of wins over Cincinnati's Caroline Morton and Guna (8-6) in the first round, followed by an 8-2 rout of Sara Castellano and Lexi Keberle (Wisconsin) and an 8-4 win over Jackie Carr and Tatum Rice of Arkansas. Corley and Asghar held on to beat Syracuse's Sofiya Golubouskaya and Guzal Yusupova in a wild 9-7 semifinal, but were defeated by Sophia Blanco and Catherine Galihur of Oklahoma State, 8-3, in a Bedlam final.

Sooners Martina Capurro and Camila Romero also had a successful weekend in doubles, advancing to the semifinals. The pair notched victories over Lindsay Zimmerman and Sophie Moenster of Georgetown, 8-6; Kateryna Popova and Viktoriya Dzyuba (Lipscomb), 9-8; and Oklahoma State's Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova, 8-6. Romero and Capurro's run ended in the semifinal, with eventual champions Blanco and Galihur (Oklahoma State) prevailing, 8-3.

In her first tournament as a Sooner, Capurro advanced to the singles quarterfinals. The sophomore collected victories over Arkansas' Rice, 6-2, 6-2, and Princeton's Claire McKee, 7-5, 6-4, in the first and second rounds, respectively. In the round of 16, Capurro defeated teammate Asghar after a three-set battle, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to move into the quarterfinal, where she fell to Galihur after another extended match, 6-7 (0), 6-2, 6-3.

Asghar picked up a pair of singles victories on the weekend with wins over Fleur Eggnik (Marquette), 6-0, 6-4, and Alexandra Belle of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-3, before meeting Capurrro in the quarterfinal.

Corley notched her first win as a Sooner with a three-set victory over Michigan State's Lauren Lemonds, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. Romero recorded a round of 64 rout of Georgetown's Moenster, 6-2, 6-1.

Rice Invite

The Sooners tallied a total of 10 wins at the Rice Invite in Houston. In doubles action, Nina Jabrzemski was paired with Houston's Ndindi Ndunda, and the duo won the Flight 5 doubles title. Jabrzemski and Ndunda defeated Texas State's Murcia and Sam Houston's Asni Hill, 6-2, before taking Roo Gerritsen and Stevie Ybarra (SHSU), 7-5, to set up a finals matchup with Sooners Alli Hodges and Skyler Miller. Jabrzemski and Ndunda prevailed after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (1).

Miller and Hodges advanced to the final by virtue of a first round win over Andrea Fuchs and Josefina Cassara (Texas State), 6-0, and a 6-4 semifinal victory over Sofia San Jose Moreno (McNeese State) and Sophie Omoware (UTSA).

In singles Flight 8, Hodges compiled a 2-1 record, collecting her first win as a Sooner after defeating Cassara, 7-5, 6-2, in the first round. She then fell to Alumdena Boza of UT-Arlington, 6-0, 6-4, before picking up a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Petra Kaszas (SHSU) in the consolation bracket.

Jabrzemski was also 2-1 in singles play. The sophomore dropped her first match to UTSA's Omoworare, 6-3, 6-3, before winning back-to-back matches in consolation. Jabrzemski defeated Ybarra (SHSU), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 1-0 (10-2), and Vera Carvalho (Stephen F. Austin), 6-3, 6-3.

Miller went 1-1 on the weekend with a win over USF's Alex Mijos (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), before falling to Nidhi Surapeneni (North Texas), 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The sophomore did not get to play a consolation match due to inclement weather.

The Sooners return to action next weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships held in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
