Sooners Go Coast to Coast for Week Two

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's tennis team will be represented on both coasts this weekend, with the Sooners sending players to the Fountain Valley Futures in Fountain Valley, Calif. and the Ivy Plus Invite in Princeton, N.J.
Jake Van Emburgh, Mason Beiler and Ferran Calvo will play in the Fountain Valley Futures' qualifying draw, beginning Friday. Senior Alex Bakshi has earned an entry into the tournament's main draw, set to begin on Tuesday.
This weekend marks the first fall competition for Bakshi, Calvo and Van Emburgh, who all enter the year ranked in the ITA preseason release. Bakshi is No. 16 overall; Calvo is No. 34; and Van Emburgh is No. 70 after capturing the 2018 Oracle/ITA National Summer Championships singles title. Beiler made his fall debut at the Crimson Tide 4-in-the-Fall, where he notched his first win as a Sooner in his first collegiate match.
"Here at Oklahoma we're trying to take our guys to a lot of pro tournaments," said head coach Nick Crowell. "The tournament out in California is a great event. We're looking to get a lot of matches against great competition and really get out there and compete hard."
Representing OU at the Ivy Plus Invite are Max Stewart, Jochen Bertsch, Matt Rodriguez and Taine Bernhard, with freshmen Rodriguez and Bernhard making their first tournament appearances as Sooners. Stewart and Bertsch also competed at the Crimson Tide 4-in-the-Fall, with Stewart advancing to the semifinal of his respective draw.
The Ivy Plus Invite features 96 players from 20 different schools, including host Princeton, and the Sooners' regional rivals Texas and Tulsa.
The tournament will be played in six 16-player singles draws and six doubles draws of eight teams each. First serve is at 8:30 a.m. each day, with two doubles and one singles match per player on Friday; two singles matches Saturday; and one doubles and one singles contest each on Sunday.
"Our guys are going to go out there and play seven matches, and that's what we need in the fall: lots of quality matches against great opponents," said Crowell. "We'll get to go out there and see what we need to work on, and at the same time, try to win a title."
